Unlocking Trust and Scale in Nature-Based Climate Solutions: Investment Insights into Chloris Geospatial
The Big Picture
Forests cover one-third of the planet and play a vital role in global climate action. They store an estimated 300 billion tons of carbon – equivalate to 1,100 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) if released, which would match 28 years’ worth of the current annual global emissions. Acting as natural carbon sinks, forest ecosystems – particularly above-ground biomass – are essential to achieving global climate goals, with potential to contribute over 30% of emissions reductions needed worldwide.
However, the promise of nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation has been undermined by skepticism around forest carbon credits. This skepticism stems from outdated or inaccurate measurement methods, lack of transparency, and high-profile scandals[1] – most notably revealed by The Guardian. As a result, capital flows to high-impact projects have slowed, even as demand for high-quality, verifiable carbon removal continues to grow.
Why It Matters
We invested in Chloris Geospatial because we believe their technology is the missing link to restoring trust and unlocking growth in carbon markets as well as improving accounting standards. The ability to independently, transparently, and affordably measure carbon dynamics across all woody vegetation globally is a game-changer. Chloris’ platform ensures that every credit genuinely represents one ton of CO₂ removed from the atmosphere.
Chloris empowers corporations, especially in the FLAG sectors, project developers, governments and others to make evidence-based decisions, unlock new capital for high-integrity projects, and accelerate the transition to a net-zero and nature-positive economy. Their sole focus on measurement, reporting and verification (MRV), coupled with a team of world-class forest data scientists, positions Chloris as the independent arbiter.
“We are excited to back Chloris Geospatial as they set a new global standard for measuring natural capital. Their platform brings much-needed transparency and trust to carbon markets, paving the way for scalable climate impact and responsible investment in nature-based solutions.” – Patrick Elftmann, Managing Partner at Future Energy Ventures.
What They Do
Chloris Geospatial is redefining how forest carbon is measured and monitored. By combining advanced proprietary AI and machine learning, satellite-based LiDAR, optical imagery and other ancillary data, and applying state-of-the-art data fusion techniques, Chloris can “weigh trees from space”. This enables the delivering globally consistent, audit-grade biomass and carbon data for every 30- and 10-meter square on the planet for just 1% of the cost of traditional methods. Their proprietary dataset, built on 25 years of historical data and manual calibration, enables unprecedented accuracy and scale in measurement, reporting and verification (MRV).
Chloris’s SaaS platform supports voluntary carbon markets, supply chain insetting, and compliance reporting with flexible access via web app, data licensing, or API.
Chloris’ is led by a world-class team uniquely equipped to bring integrity this market urgently needs. Alessandro Baccini, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer, has spent over two decades developing methods for measuring and monitoring biomass from space, pioneering scientific breakthroughs that form the foundation of Chloris’ technology. Marco Albani, Co-Founder and CEO, trained as an ecosystem scientist at Harvard University, has dedicated his career to sustainability, skillfully bridging the worlds of business and science. Throughout their work, both recognized a critical gap in understanding and data on how land use changes affect carbon stored in vegetation. This insight led to the founding of Chloris.
How It’s Going and Looking Ahead
Chloris is already trusted by leading enterprise and carbon market customers, including the Ecosystem Restoration Standard, Verra, MSCI, Shell, Pachama, and Manulife and has a robust pipeline of major brands. As regulations and market standards evolve–and as the demand shifts toward high quality, durable carbon removal credits – Chloris is well positioned to become the definite platform for natural capital measurement, catalyzing climate impact at planetary scale.
With this new investment, Chloris can accelerate product development, expand global reach, and deepen partnerships across the carbon value chain. We are proud to support the team as they deliver measurable, verifiable climate impact and set a new benchmark for the industry.
